HARRISON'S BIRD FOODS HAND REARING FORMULAS
As the nutritional requirements of each species of birds vary from hatching to fledging, Harrison's has produced a range of hand-rearing foods of high nutritive value, formulated for ease of digestion to meet each growing bird's needs. All of these products can be bought through our online shop. A range of handfeeding equipment, including syringes and gavage tubes are available through our sister site, www.avequip.co.uk

For those breeders who hand-rear their young, Neonate Formula provides the ideal started diet for most parrots and indeed the majority of small passerine birds. As the baby birds develop Juvenile Formula provides the correct nutrition for continued development.

For those who are dedicated to wild bird rehabilitation and the rearing of orphaned nestlings, Recovery Formula provides the critical nutrients to stabilise injured and debilitated birds.

In conjunction with Neonate Formula, Recovery Formula provides the diets for rearing all wild bird nestlings.

HBD'S NEONATE FORMULA

Neonate Formula is an easily digested nutritional hand-feeding diet for baby parrots from hatching to 2-3 weeks of age (see chart).

Its formulation makes it the hand-feeding diet of choice for passerines such as swifts, swallows, flycatchers and warblers, shrikes, titmice, larks, woodpeckers, jays, robins, grosbeaks, song sparrows, finches, canaries and more, from hatching to fledging.

Because of its high nutritive quality and digestibility when mixed with High Potency Mash, it makes an ideal rearing food for finches, canaries and budgies.

HBD'S RECOVERY/PASSERINE FORMULA

A baby passerine HBD's Recovery Formula provides an easily assimilated source of nutrients for ill avian patients (passerines and psittacines).

Indications:
* When anorexia has slowed gastrointestinal emptying time. Not for cases of illeus or stasis.
* As a dietary transition for recovering patients that have been on a seed diet and need nutritional support.
* Medical and surgical patients that are recovering from pansystemic failure and have progressed to a point where oral, easily digested diets are indicated.

For debilitated or injured birds use as gavage (tube) mix until the bird is self feeding.

For those dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned nestlings, Recovery Formula is ideal as a hand-feeding diet from hatching to fledging of small insectivorous birds with an apparent inability to digest cornstarch*.

Using Neonate and Recovery formulas:

Mix 1 part dry formula to 1 warm water. For birds with slow growth or slow crop-emptying time, add a pinch per feeding of HBD's Avizyme. Do not dilute the formula beyond the instructions because structural abnormalities may result. Altering the Recovery Formula in any other way will cause an imbalance in the formula.

JUVENILE HAND-FEEDING FORMULA™

Zinc poisoning Is recommended for the hand-feeding of large psittacine chicks from day one; hand-feeding baby parrots over seven days of age until weaning (see chart above)

This formula should not be used in cockatiels under 21 days of age.

Special uses: In common with Recovery and Neonate formulas, Juvenile formula can be used as a digestive aid, for hospitalised birds that require supplemental feeding; birds with beak injury; tube feeding for diet conversion of extremely stubborn birds.

Using Juvenile Formula:

Mix Harrison's Juvenile Formula with very hot water. Allow to cool to lukewarm (less than 109°F or just warm to the wrist) before feeding. If lumpy, use cold water and mix with fork. If too thick, add Harrison's Avizyme ™, let stand until desired consistency then feed. Repeat feeding when crop is almost empty, gradually increasing the amount until only three meals a day are given. Monitoring your bird's body weight daily is the ideal way to evaluate your hand-feeding success.

Suggested daily Juvenile Formula amounts:

Day 1 1 Part Formula and 6 parts water
gradually increase to:
Days 2-6 1 Part Formula and 3 parts water
From Day 7 1 Part Formula and 2 parts water

In most cases feed 1 Tbs formula per 150-200 g weight.

(Psittacines over the age of 3 weeks may eat HBD's Juvenile Handfeeding Formula. For the first day of conversion, mix Neonate Formula 50:50, with Juvenile Handfeeding Formula, which would be offered 100% by day 3.

For Best Results:

Allow crop to substantially empty before feeding.

One-to seven-day-old birds and birds with slow crop-emptying can benefit from adding a pinch of Harrison's Avizyme to the formula just prior to feeding.

To aid weaning after 21 days of age, add 1 tablespoon of finely crushed Harrison's High Potency Formula or High Potency Mash to each cup of formula.

Also introduce dry High Potency Formula in a separate bowl.

Caution:
Feeding should not be attempted by inexperienced persons.
Do not attempt to feed birds that are not aggressively feeding.
Do not use formula that is too cold or too liquid.
Feedings must be accomplished promptly to avoid appetite loss.
Failure to heed cautions could result in the death of the bird.
